Of course it got lost. It got lost in kids, mortgages, credit card payments, and housecleaning Sundays. Somewhere in all that, you forgot what really matters to you- and if you haven't yet, you will. How do I know this? Well, for one, we forget most things that pop in and out of our head. If you can hardly remember to take out the trash, what makes you think you are going to remember your dream of skydiving when the only time it ever pops in your head are a few sparse nights a year on the front porch, wistfully staring at the moon?
But you want to remember because these things are important to you. Much more important than taking out the trash. So what can you do? Well, what do you do when you need to remember the trash? You write it down.
Your dream sheet:
On a sheet of paper, list all the things you want to do in your life and separate them into two categories: Everyday Goals, like sending flowers to your friends on their birthdays, or spending a day on the lake with your family, and Life-long Goals, such as visiting the Great Pyramids, or going deep-sea diving. Your list should be no more than 50 items long, so as to keep things from getting lost within the list. Make it a habit to look at it everyday. Put it someplace you will see it, just as you do your "take out the trash" sticky notes, so that you will never forget.
Ask yourself daily or weekly, "What have I done today/this week to accomplish these goals?"
What will happen is that, by seeing it everyday, you will start to feel an urgency to accomplish these set goals. Just like chore lists, we want to see the list get smaller, and by doing that, we feel like we are making progress. The same will apply with your dream sheet. By seeing it everyday, you will be driven and motivated to mark things off of it, big and small, and, before you know it, you will have accomplished your dreams.
Ya, just like that.
Happy Seeking!
